EPA Conference on Market Mechanisms and Incentives for Environmental Policy -- May 1 - 2, 2003

(04/29/03) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Center for Environmental Economics and National Center for Environmental Research will present a two-day workshop on “Market Mechanisms and Incentives: Applications to Environmental Policy.” EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman will give the keynote address on Thursday, May 1, from 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., discussing Clear Skies and the potential for use of market-based approaches to pollution control in new areas. On Friday, May 2, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., Nobel Laureate Vernon Smith will give a luncheon address on the use of experimental economics for market-oriented environmental management.
In conference sessions, EPA economic researchers will discuss the implications of market mechanisms and incentives research for federal, state and local environmental policy. EPA researchers and grantees from EPA’s Science To Achieve Results (STAR) program will present research on market-based approaches for water, carbon, and sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. There will also be a panel discussion led by Tracy Mehan, Assistant Administrator for EPA's Office of Water, and Jeffery Holmstead, Assistant Administrator for EPA's Office of Air.
