CHICAGO (May 27, 2010) — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has announced the winners of the first Region 5 Climate Change Art Challenge for middle school students. The winning artists are Annamaria Mastrodomenico, Chicago, Ill.; Jenna Phillips, Bloomington, Ind.; Anna Brooks, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Maggie Panetta, Rochester, Minn.; Hannah Donovan, Cincinnati, Ohio; and Claire Monzel, Milwaukee, Wis.

EPA asked sixth- seventh- and eighth-grade students to create a drawing or a painting that responds to the question "What is Climate Change?"

“I commend every contestant for their creativity and for expanding the dialogue on climate change,” said Cheryl Newton, director of Region 5’s Air and Radiation Division.

Region 5 received over 450 submissions. Winners were chosen based on the most creative and representative depictions of climate change. One winner was selected from each of EPA Region 5’s six states: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.

The winners will receive an eco-friendly plaque commending their achievement. All winning artwork is posted at: https://www.epa.gov/reg5oair/airinfo.html.
