WEST HAZLETON, Pa. -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced that it has cited Flint Ink Corp. for improper storage of hazardous waste at its manufacturing plant in West Hazleton, Pa.
EPA’s September 30, 1999 administrative complaint proposes a $45,925 penalty for violations of the federal statute regulating the treatment, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste. EPA alleges that the company violated safeguards designed to reduce the environmental and health risks of hazardous wastes that are stored at facilities on a short-term basis prior to disposal.
Specifically, EPA alleges that a joint June 15, 1998 inspection by EPA and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection discovered one 55-gallon drum of hazardous waste stored beyond the federal 90-day limit for temporary storage, and 13 drums that were not dated when placed in storage. The drums were shipped to a hazardous waste disposal facility on June 23, 1998, a week after the inspection.
The company is entitled to a hearing to contest the alleged violations and the proposed penalty.
