GEORGIA SUPERFUND SITE DELETED FROM NATIONAL LIST OF HAZARDOUS WASTE SITES

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today that the Cedartown Municipal Landfill Superfund site in Cedartown, Georgia has been deleted from the National Priorities List (NPL) of hazardous waste sites.

The site was proposed for deletion in November 1998. EPA, with concurrence from the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, announced it had determined that all appropriate cleanup measures had been implemented and that no further cleanup by responsible parties is appropriate. Additionally, EPA determined that the remedial activities conducted at the site are effective and fully protective of public health and the environment. Deletion of the site from the NPL will not preclude eligibility for subsequent Superfund-financed actions if future conditions warrant such actions.

The Deletion docket, a compilation of documents which formed the basis for EPA's decision, and other site related documents are available for public review at the Cedartown Public Library, 245 East Avenue in Cedartown.

The Cedartown Municipal landfill Superfund site encompasses a former iron ore mine which subsequently was used as a municipal landfill. The landfill received primarily municipal sanitary waste and, reportedly, industrial waste. The site was added to the NPL in March 1989.
