GRUNDY, Va. -- The Buchanan County Public School District received a $5,000 environmental education grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, mid-Atlantic region, for a teacher training workshop, "Save Our Streams."

The project is designed to improve awareness of streams and water quality in the county by providing a workshop for about 20 teachers from kindergarten through grade 12, who will incorporate concepts they learn into their lesson plans. Area schools will then adopt and protect a stream in their community, and a county-wide network will be established to evaluate environmental data and issues.

"This kind of a program in our schools increases environmental knowledge, enhances critical thinking and promotes awareness of water quality," said W. Michael McCabe, regional administrator for the mid-Atlantic region.

EPA’s education grant program is designed to stimulate grass-roots environmental education. In the mid-Atlantic region, 25 grant recipients include schools, civic groups and non-profit organizations. Nationally, $3 million was awarded in 1999.
