The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that a Superfund hazardous substance removal will begin at the Industrial Pollution Control (IPC) site, Jackson, Hinds County, MS during the week of April 5, 1999. A removal is a short-term cleanup intended to stabilize or clean up a site that poses an imminent and substantial threat to human health or the environment. The removal will take place under the authority and direction of the Agency’s Emergency Response and Removal Branch (ERRB).
The removal will include:
inventory, analysis and preparation of the contents of drums and containers;
transportation and disposal of waste oils/water and disassembly of tanks; and
excavation and disposal of contaminated soils.
The removal is expected to be completed by July 1999 at an estimated cost of $1,360,000.
IPC, a former used oil recycling facility, operated from mid 1991 to 1997. The EPA was contacted by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality in November 1998 to evaluate the site for a possible removal action. The site is abandoned and contains evidence of trespasser entry. Contaminants of concern include ethylbenzene, xylene, phenanthrene, benzene, toluene, pyrene, anthracene, flourene, 4-methyl-2- pentanone and waste oil that is classified as ignitable under RCRA.
Persons interested in obtaining additional information are encouraged to contact Steve Spurlin, EPA On-Scene Coordinator, at 404-562-8723 or Sherryl A. Carbonaro, Community Relations Coordinator, at 404- 562-8742 or 1-800-564-7577.
