Community Meeting Scheduled in Hope, Maine to Discuss Reuse Planning Process for Union Chemical Co. Site

(Boston, Mass. - Feb. 16, 2006) - On Sat. Feb. 18, EPA will host the second of three community meetings in Hope, Maine to seek input from local residents on the potential future uses of the former Union Chemical Co. plant. The meeting will be jointly hosted by EPA along with the Maine Dept. of Environmental Protection.

The meeting will be held at the Hope Elementary School, at 34 Highfield Road in Hope, between 9:00 a.m. and 12 noon.

The former Union Chemical Co. property is a parcel of land along Route 17 in South Hope. Located on a well-traveled commuter and tourist corridor, the property offers a unique redevelopment opportunity. The meeting taking place this weekend is the second of three community meetings being held to ensure that local residents are involved in the reuse planning process for the site. Community members and other interested parties are invited to participate and share their ideas for future uses of the 12.5 acre parcel.

The third community meeting to discuss future uses of the site will be held on March 25.

Union Chemical Co. began operations at the site in 1969 as a formulator of paint and coating strippers, and later expanded to undertake chemical recycling and incineration. Since 1984 when the plant closed, EPA and the Maine Dept. of Environmental Protection have worked to address soil and groundwater contamination at the site.
