EPA Grant Helps Gardens Grow in West Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA – Community beautification efforts in West Philadelphia got a boost today with a $5,000 environmental education grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to assist a community group with garden enhancement projects.

“This funding will provide an opportunity for neighbors and students to work together and beautify their community. Cleaning up abandoned lots and creating neighborhood gardens helps people understand the importance of protecting public health by preserving a safe environment,” said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region

Welsh presented the check to the Urban Tree Connection during a ceremony at a community garden at 55th and Pearl Streets in the city’s Haddington neighborhood.

The Urban Tree Connection promotes quality of life in the Haddington neighborhood by introducing children to the basic concepts of environmental science and teaching them the ecological importance of maintaining urban green spaces.

Since 1992, EPA has provided almost $3 million annually in funding to local organizations and schools nationwide. These grants fund education programs in nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and governmental agencies supporting a wide range of environmental issues for citizens of all ages.
