FORMER SCHOOL BOARD SUPERVISOR SENTENCED AND FINED FOR ASBESTOS VIOLATIONS

On Aug. 7, James Scharf, former supervisor of the maintenance department for the St. Tammany Parish School Board in Louisiana, was sentenced to three years probation and required to pay $12,452.75 in restitution for violating the Clean Air Act by the negligent release of asbestos into the air. The release occurred during the removal of an asbestos coating from a commercialsized boiler located at a school board maintenance facility in Covington, La. The asbestos was then buried at the maintenance facility lot. Asbestos is a fibrous material which has been linked to lung cancer and other lung diseases. The case is a result of a joint investigation by EPA's Criminal Investigation Division and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.
