EPA GIVES REGISTRATION PREFERENCE TO
ORGANOPHOSPHATE ALTERNATIVES

In an effort to expedite its review of reduced-risk pesticides that may be used as alternatives to organophosphates, EPA’s Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) is giving these alternatives a registration preference. Under this change to OPP’s registration priority system, alternatives to organophosphates that are granted reduced-risk status or that are given expedited review will become an Agency “priority.” Organophosphates are a class of pesticides commonly used on food crops, and in homes and gardens. EPA is currently reviewing all uses of the organophosphate pesticides to ensure they meet new safety standards required by the 1996 Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA). The Agency is considering the availability of alternatives as part of its FQPA review. By designating reduced-risk alternatives as a “priority” the process for reviewing these potential new products is expedited. A copy of the Agency’s new policy was published in the Federal Register on Sept. 2 and is available on the Internet at: https://www.epa.gov/fedrgstr. It also can be retrieved on faxphone by calling 202-401-0527 and selecting item 6111.
