PA EPA SEEKS COMMENT ON PROPOSED PROGRAM FOR SELF-CERTIF.
FOR RELEASE: TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1997
EPA SEEKS COMMENT ON PROPOSED PROGRAM FOR SELF-CERTIFICATION OF CHEMISTRY DATA FOR REGISTERING OR REREGISTERING PESTICIDES
EPA is seeking comments on a proposal to allow pesticide registrants to self-certify that certain product chemistry studies have been completed in accordance with Agency regulations, without submitting actual studies unless requested. The self-certification process would only apply to data on the physical and chemical characteristics of new products that are composed of mixtures of already registered active and/or inert ingredients, and which are not expected to produce a new chemical (also known as products produced by a "non-integrated formulation system"). The proposed program is voluntary and is intended to simplify and accelerate the processing of applications for registering or reregistering pesticides while maintaining necessary safeguards to protect public health and the environment. Under the program, applicants will submit a one-page summary of their product's physical and chemical characteristics, a statement certifying the results of the product chemistry studies performed and a statement certifying that the studies were conducted in accordance with EPA's Good Laboratory Practice regulations. The supporting data for these studies will not be required with the application. However, registrants must keep the study records and submit them to the Agency if requested. EPA's proposed self-certification program is fully described in a Pesticide Registration notice (PR 97-2), which is available by writing or calling: Dr. Sami Malak 7505W, Office of Pesticide Programs, U.S. EPA, 40l M St. S.W., Washington, D.C. 20460: telephone 305-308-8392; e-mail [email protected]. Comments are due by April 7 and should be sent to: Public Response Section, Field Operations Division (7506C), Office of Pesticide Programs, U.S. EPA, 40l M St. SW, Washington, D.C. 20460.
