(03/10/03) Administrator Christine Whitman recognized March as “Small Business Month.” To support small businesses in their environmental efforts, the Administrator is visiting small business throughout the country. At the first “National Summit on Small Business and the Environment,” on March 13, she will present a revised EPA Small Business Strategy. The Summit will provide a forum for key small business leaders, trade associations, and state representatives. The Summit will begin the process to create a unified and coordinated approach for EPA and their environmental partners to understand the operations and needs of small businesses and to implement programs and policies that consider small business needs. EPA’s efforts directly support President Bush small business plan, announced in 2002. Throughout federal agencies, programs are supporting the nation’s 22.4 million small businesses -- representing 99.7% of all employers--and 3.13 million or about 14% are owned by minorities. Small businesses contributed $745.1 billion to the U.S. economy in 2001. For information on EPA’s small business-related activities visit: www.smallbiz-enviroweb.org
