DENVER-- Asthma is a lung disease that affects an estimated 14.6 million adults and 4.8 million children in the United States. Since 1980, the biggest growth in asthma cases has been in children under five years-old. More than 67,000 Colorado children have asthma. Nationally, it is the number-one cause of school absenteeism, accounting for 10 million missed school days each year. It also is the leading cause of childhood hospital admissions with 100,000 children being hospitalized due to asthma-related illness each year at a cost of almost $2 billion annually. The rate of asthma has more than doubled over the past fifteen years, prompting aggressive research by the American Lung Association and others.
