PHILADELPHIA -- The Environmental Protection Agency awarded a $10,000 environmental education grant to the Pennsylvania Urban Tree Connection for an innovative learning program that gets elementary students involved in revitalizing five vacant lots in the Strawberry Mansion section of north Philadelphia.

The project will include workshops for teachers at the R.R. Wright Elementary school on neighborhood revitalization. Then teachers will then work with five classes in grades 3-5 on planning and developing vacant lots in their community into garden space and a safe space for children.

“This type of training program gives students a opportunity to get directly involved in a neighborhood revitalization project and educates them on environmental issues in their communities,” said Bradley Campbell, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region

EPA’s education grant program is designed to stimulate grass-roots environmental education. This was one of six grants totaling more than $42,000 awarded in Pennsylvania. Nationally, EPA awarded more than $2.3 million in environmental education grants in 2000 to schools, civic groups and non-profit organizations.
