(Boston, Mass. – June 28, 2006) – A public information meeting will be held on Thurs. July 6 in Brooksville, Maine to discuss ongoing efforts by EPA and the State of Maine to investigate contamination and perform cleanup activities at the Callahan Mine Superfund site.
At the meeting, staff from EPA, the Maine Dept. of Transportation (Maine DOT) and the Maine Dept. of Environmental Protection (Maine DEP) will be available to update community members and other interested parties in the current status of the site and what actions to expect this summer.
The public meeting will be held on Thurs. July 6 at 7:00 p.m., at the Brooksville Public Service Building Meeting Room, at One Townhouse Road in Brooksville.
In 2005, the MaineDOT completed a comprehensive Work Plan to perform the Remedial Investigation and Field Survey work at the Callahan Mine Site, and a substantial amount of work was completed last year.
This summer, investigation activities will continue at the Site. The major focus of the work will be to evaluate subsurface conditions in the waste areas, assess the hydrogeologic conditions and evaluate the quality of the groundwater. Further, there will likely be field activities to better refine the ecological and human health risk assessments, by collecting additional samples for tissue and toxicity evaluation. Also, a lobster sampling program that began in 2005 will also be completed.
