Earth Day 1998 Highlights

Earth Day Environmental Fair
More than 3,000 Dallas/Fort Worth area elementary and middle school students will participate in this day- long event in the Automobile Building at Fair Park. About 60 exhibitors will offer materials and hands-on demonstrations to explain the importance of a clean environment and ways everyone can help protect and preserve it.

Earth Day Environmental Science Fair
Students from three dozen Dallas/Fort Worth area schools have entered science projects to be judged by EPA scientists during the Earth Day Environmental Fair. Awards will be presented in the afternoon by Acting Regional Administrator Jerry Clifford.

President's Environmental Youth Awards
Plaques will be presented to the three Region 6 runners-up during Earth Day Environmental Fair activities.

Green Ribbons
More than 40,000 green Earth Day ribbons have been distributed throughout Region 6 to increase public awareness about protecting our environment.

Environmental Youth Summit
High school students held Environmental Summits to raise awareness and search for solutions to our nation's environmental problems. Summits were held in Shreveport, Louisiana, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and Dallas, Texas.

Environmental Teach-Ins
Nearly 120 EPA employees volunteered to teach science classes ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade in their local schools. Teaching materials and curricula were prepared for elementary, middle and high school classes.

Environmental Song Contest
Middle school students in selected areas competed to compose an original song about an environmental situation in their community.

Enviro Fairs
EPA employees volunteered their time and talents to man booths, give hands-on demonstrations and hand out materials at about a dozen area environmental fairs.

EPA Photo Contest
EPA employees participated in a regionwide photo contest. Winning photos will be displayed at the Earth Day Environmental Fair.

EPA T-shirts and Earthballs
EPA employees designed T-shirts for Earth Day and sold them along with Earthballs, baseballs printed to look like the earth from space, to co-workers. The small profit helped fund Earth Day activities. Employees were encouraged to wear their Earth Day T-shirts to work April 22.
