Stakeholder Group Forming for Input on Avtex Superfund Site

Release Date: 2/23/1999
Contact Information: Richard Kuhn, phone: (215) 814-3063

FRONT ROYAL, Va.  - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is forming a stakeholder group to provide public input on the cleanup and reuse of the Avtex Fibers Superfund site here.  The group will be comprised of local individuals and organizations who reflect the diverse interests of Front Royal and Warren County.

The EPA is working with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the Front Royal Economic Development Authority and the FMC Corporation to form the stakeholders group.

"EPA has always valued two-way communication between the agency and the community during the cleanup of a site.  The stakeholder group gives community members an additional opportunity to contribute to redevelopment issues that reflect their desires," said Richard Kuhn, EPA community involvement coordinator.

Front Royal and Warren County recently approved a conceptual reuse plan for the site.  According to the conceptual plan, the area east of the railroad tracks would be redeveloped for commercial or light industrial use, and the area west of the tracks would be redeveloped for recreational use.

To learn more about the stakeholder’s group, the public may attend an open house on Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at Samuels Public Library, 538 Villa Avenue, Front Royal from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Interested individuals may sign up at the open house, or may contact either Judy Gretsch at DecisionQuest-EIM, 1401 I Street, N.W., Suite 505, Washington, D.C. 20005, (202) 408-1000 (collect calls will be accepted); or Richard Kuhn, EPA, 1650 Arch Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103, 1-800-553-2509.
