BOSTON - Two residents of Maine were among 11 residents of New England who were recognized this week by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for demonstrating exceptional work in drinking water education.
The EPA's six annual Environmental Educator Award was given out this week at the Blaine House in Augusta.
"These citizens have helped spread the word on the importance of clean, safe drinking water," said Mindy S. Lubber, Regional Administrator for EPA New England. "They are being recognized for efforts that will help ensure our drinking water is protected into the future."
The recipients in Maine are:
- Patricia Gaudreau, Auburn, Maine: Goudreau, a sixth grade teacher at Webster School in Auburn, has been teaching with the Earth in mind for 13 years. She uses Lake Auburn, the source of water for area residents, as an outdoor lab to educate students on water quality and conservation.
- Debbie Richards, Rockland, Maine: Richards, a second grade teacher, encourages other teachers to be involved and does a series on water that involves bringing in officials from the local water company.
