TRANSPORTATION INNOVATION AWARDS RECOGNIZE ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC BENEFITS

Transportation Partners “Way to Go” Awards have been awarded for nine projects at city, county and state levels and private sector, non-governmental and university programs. The awards were presented as part of EPA’s program to recognize creative local transportation solutions that enhance community life, conserve environmental quality and improve transportation alternatives. Increased use of bicycles is being promoted in Long Beach, Calif., through free valet bicycle parking as a service to downtown employees and residents; in Tempe, Ariz., with a plan to include new bicyle and pedestrian facilities that will reduce driver-only vehicles; and in Xenia and Greene counties, Ohio, where 60 miles of former railways and a former railroad depot have been converted to encourage increased bicycle riding and walking to and from homes, workplaces and activity centers. Environmental improvement was achieved by NISSAN, USA, by providing employees in Gardena, Calif., with a service which encourages commuting to work via modes other than the single-occupant vehicle. The use of telecommuting is being encouraged through the Oregon Office of Energy project. A comprehensive transportation/parking plan in Aspen, Colo., will hold traffic at 1993 levels. A project by the Thomas J. Evans Foundation will provide an alternative method of pollution-free transportation and a safe and child-friendly transportation system in Newark, Ohio. A new non-profit commuter system has been developed by the Rideshare Co. in Windsor, Conn., which is considered a unique inexpensive, environmentally-friendly form of commuting. The University of Colorado now has a student-run, student-funded program which has increased the use of buses five-fold in six years.
