EPA and ADEM to Conduct Removal Site Assessment at Former Gasoline Refinery Facilities in Alabama

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) will be conducting a Removal Site Assessment at both the GAMXX Refinery in Theodore, Alabama and the Seabury Station satellite storage facility located 26 miles north of the refinery facility in Kushla, Alabama beginning March 14, 2005. 

The Removal Site Assessment is the result of a referral from ADEM to ensure that the facilities do not pose a threat to human health and the environment.  Activities to be conducted during the Removal Site Assessment include, but are not limited to: comprehensive surface and sub-surface sampling of the soil, surface water sampling, evaluation of each aboveground storage tank to determine contents and gather samples, identifying drums or other materials on-site, sampling of existing groundwater wells, and preparing the Removal Site Assessment report when sampling data is made available.  EPA and ADEM will be conducting the Removal Site Assessment for approximately one week at the abandoned facilities. 

Follow-up activity may be conducted at the facilities depending on the sampling data collected during the Removal Site Assessment.

The GAMXX Refinery has been idle for approximately 16 years.  The Seabury Station facility is connected to the GAMXX Refinery by a 26-mile pipeline system, and the facility was originally used to store crude oil gathered from surrounding oil fields.
