The award ceremony will take place at 11:00 am in Liberty Square, site of the Fort Sumter National Monument Visitor Education Center and the South Carolina Aquarium.
EPA Region 4 created the “Excellence in Site Reuse” award to recognize those who have gone above and beyond in supporting the Superfund Redevelopment Initiative through outstanding efforts when redeveloping a Superfund Site. The city of Charleston, SC, and SCE&G are being recognized for their commitment to Site cleanup and redevelopment of a former manufactured gas plant at the Calhoun Park Area Site into community amenities that support local tourism, generating economic growth, and improving quality of life.
The visitor attractions in the Calhoun Park area include the South Carolina Aquarium, the Fort Sumter Ferry departure site, and a multi-level parking deck. In addition, the city of Charleston is currently constructing the Charlotte Street Park along the Cooper River.
