EPA SOLICITS PROPOSALS TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF LEAD PAINT HAZARDS

Denise Kearns 202-260-4376

EPA’s Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics is soliciting proposals
under a grant program to increase public awareness and prevent lead poisoning
in high risk populations.  EPA anticipates that $450,000 will be available
in fiscal year 1997, with individual grants awarded in the range of $20,000
to $60,000.  The purpose of the program is to target and deliver public
education and outreach products and services to populations that are at
greatest risk to lead-based paint exposure and poisoning. Populations most
at risk are the young children of families who live in predominantly low-income
communities, minority communities (e.g., African American, Asian Pacific American,
Hispanic American, American Indian), communities located in large metropolitan
areas, or communities that have a large stock of older houses and apartment
buildings.  Projects that propose to deliver lead hazard awareness and poisoning
prevention information to these communities, including families, care-takers,
health-care providers and other relevant groups are eligible for consideration
under this grant program.  Applicants may develop their own outreach materials
or use already existing products in their proposal.  Applications must be
submitted by July 28.  For a copy of the Federal Register notice announcing
the program and outlining specific application procedures, contact the
Toxic Substances Control Act Hotline at 202-554-1404 or use the Internet at:
