(North Charleston, S.C. - June 3, 2011) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, City of North Charleston and the River Network on Sunday, will construct a new community rain garden at the Gussie Green Community Center in North Charleston, S.C. Officials will be on-hand along with local youth, residents and volunteers to install rain barrels and plant a rain garden in the Chicora-Cherokee community.
Rain gardens will capture rainwater runoff into soil before it flows into streets and storm drains allowing local plants to remove pollutants from runoff through the natural biological and chemical process. In addition to protection from stormwater runoff, today’s rain garden installation will be an educational experience for local youth and residents to learn more about green job opportunities including environmental management for local parks and recreation services.
