EPA TO HOST INFORMAL MEETING ON SOUTH FORK EEL RIVER PROPOSAL, HOLD PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD, OFFICIAL HEARING

SAN FRANCISCO -- Representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold an informal public meeting Oct. 13 in Garberville to present a proposed water quality improvement plan for sediment and temperature problems in the South Fork of the Eel River.
The proposed plan, known as a total maximum daily load , or "TMDL," identifies the amount of improvements in sediment and stream temperatures that are needed to address the decline of the river's native salmon populations. The TMDL meets legally required deadlines of the federal Clean Water Act.
The meeting will include a presentation of the plan and a question and answer period. A formal public comment period for the proposed TMDL will run from Oct. 6 through Nov. 7. Public comments will taken at a formal public hearing Oct. 26 in Redway. The final TMDL report is due in December.
