     SAN FRANCISCO   The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced that the Parker-Hannifin Corp. of Irvine, Calif. will pay a $29,364 for violations of the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.

     During a routine inspection at the company at 14300 Alton Feb. 4, EPA inspectors found a number of hazardous waste handling violations.

     Parker Hannifin manufactures, assembles, tests and services control systems and components for the aerospace and aviation industries. It generates large quantities of hazardous waste. The EPA's inspection found that Parker did not meet the RCRA requirements by:

          storing hazardous waste for more than 90 days without a proper permit;

          not closing and labeling hazardous waste containers;

          not inspecting hazardous waste storage areas;

          not providing adequate aisle space in hazardous waste storage areas in case of an emergency;

          not maintaining complete emergency planning and training records.

     "Companies that handle toxic wastes need to manage them properly not only to protect the  environment, but to ensure public safety," said Jeff Scott, director of waste division in EPA's San Francisco regional office. "The EPA will continue to strictly enforce all regulations governing facilities who generate and manage hazardous waste"

     Since the inspections, Parker Hannifin has corrected all of the violations found by EPA inspectors.
