EPA TO HOLD PUBLIC AVAILABILITY AND PUBLIC MEETING REGARDING THE ENVIRONMENTAL INVESTIGATION IN RICHTON, PERRY COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), and Mississippi Department of Health (MDOH) will hold a public availability session on Monday, June 23, 2003 from 6:30pm to 9:00pm, and on Tuesday,June 24, 2003 from 9:00 a.m until 11:00 a.m. at Richton High School, 701 West Elm Avenue in Richton, Mississippi. Also, a public meeting will be held at the same location on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 from 6:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Federal and State officials will be available to provide information, answer questions, and address citizen concerns regarding the results of the environmental investigation.
The first phase of the investigation focused on the collection of samples from three municipal drinking water wells, nine private wells, one wastewater treatment plant, and two ditches. The second phase of the investigation focused on recommendations that arose from the Phase I investigation as well as specific input obtained from local residents. It included the evaluation of additional private wells, soil and groundwater adjacent to the American Woods Treatment facility and a nearby underground storage tank remediation site, and limited additional samples from the Northeast Perry Utility Association. A copy of the environmental investigation report is available to the public during normal business hours at the Richton Library on 210 Front Street. |
