PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $712,500 grant to the Tazewell County, Va. public service authority to fund the construction of a wastewater treatment system to serve 61 residences in the town of Amonate.
The system includes the installation of septic tanks to provide preliminary treatment, a small diameter sewer line to collect the wastewater, and a sand filter treatment plant to provide final treatment before discharging into the receiving stream. This treatment will eliminate the current health hazard that exists in Amonate, where no sewage treatment system is available.
“Providing adequate treatment of wastewater is a keystone of the Clean Water Act. With this grant, Amonate will eliminate a health hazard and provide a cleaner environment to live in,” said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.
