PHILADELPHIA - W. Michael McCabe, EPA’s mid-Atlantic regional administrator, praised as "a very positive step forward" an innovative plan by Perdue Farms, Inc. to turn waste poultry manure into commercial farm fertilizer pellets.
"This is exactly the kind of innovative approach that EPA had in mind in pressing the poultry industry to control manure runoff that has threatened our streams, rivers and bays," McCabe said.
"Perdue’s plan represents the smart, modern way to protect the environment, by recognizing that pollution is an unused resource that can be turned into profit. Pollution prevention can be a profitable sideline for companies savvy enough to invest in protecting the environment by salvaging a wasted resource," McCabe explained.
"I am especially glad to see a company solution that lifts the burden off small farmers to safely dispose of the poultry litter generated within the Delmarva peninsula. Also impressive is Perdue’s promise to compensate farmers for their litter in the future, sharing the profits to benefit their growers’ bottom line as well."
"This is but one step in many that need to be taken to restore water quality in the Delmarva peninsula, but it is a very positive step forward," McCabe said.
