The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today that it has begun a Superfund hazardous substance removal at the Tindall Property Transformer site, Lawrenceburg, Anderson County, Kentucky. A removal is a short-term cleanup intended to stabilize or clean up a site that poses an imminent and substantial threat to human health or the environment. The removal is taking place under the authority and direction of the Agency’s Emergency Response and Removal Branch (ERRB).

The removal will include:

transportation and disposal of the encapsulated waste and

incineration of waste at an EPA approved facility.

The removal is expected to be completed by September 1999.

The Tindall Property Transformer site is located off of Cedar Brook Road in a rural part of Lawrenceburg. The property was used for a scrap/metal recovery business from 1973 to 1985. A 1987 site inspection revealed elevated levels of lead and dioxins/furans in the surface soil. In 1987, no known permitted disposal facilities accepting dioxin waste could be identified. The U.S. EPA concluded that the most viable option to handle the waste would be excavation and encapsulation in an on-site concrete vault until such time that offsite disposal options became available.
