PHILADELPHIA - The EPA joined state government and business leaders in Talleyville today to promote the Energy Star program in Delaware.

The Energy Star label, a symbol created by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, identifies energy-efficient products, including appliances, windows, and even new homes. Using products that qualify for the Energy Star label helps conserve natural resources and saves money for consumers.

“The goal of Energy Star is to make it easy for everyone, at work and at home, to make a difference that protects the environment and saves money. We are enthusiastic about Delaware’s commitment to the this program and we look forward to working with stakeholders to bring energy efficiency to the state,” said David Lee, Director of EPA’s Energy Star residential program.

Delaware has forged a partnership linking the state with Energy Star builders and retailers to promote the use of energy-efficient products. This is a practical way to preserve our natural resources, protect the environment and save money. The average homeowner can reduce home energy costs by 30% by choosing Energy Star equipment.

Investments already made through Energy Star in Delaware will eliminate more than 4.8 billion pounds of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of planting 667,000 trees. Carbon dioxide is the primary greenhouse gas that scientists believe is causing global warming.

Current Energy Star investments in Delaware will reduce smog-causing nitrogen oxide emissions by 12 million pounds, and sulfur dioxide emissions which cause acid rain will be reduced by 34 million pounds.

Energy Star appliances for the home include refrigerators, dishwashers, air conditioners, washing machines, televisions, VCRs, and computers.

Boilers, furnaces, heat pumps, central air conditioners, insulation and high-performance windows can also qualify for the Energy Star label.
