EPA and NH DES to Hold Informational Meeting for Mohawk Tannery Site

BOSTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NH DES) and Nashua officials are hosting a public information meeting on Wednesday, April 30th at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria of the Amherst Street Elementary School to discuss upcoming activities at the former Mohawk Tannery site. The tannery is located on Warsaw Avenue in Nashua, New Hampshire.
EPA and NH DES representatives will be on hand to discuss the field work which is scheduled to take place this summer at the tannery. Activities scheduled for this summer will identify whether the groundwater, on-site buildings, and portions of the site which were not included as part of the earlier Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis have been impacted by past operations and waste disposal practices at the tannery. In addition, EPA will provide an update on the status of future cleanup activities.

The former tannery operated between 1924 and 1984. During it's 60 years of operation, the Mohawk Tannery, also known as Granite State Leathers, produced sludge and acidic residues from the tanning process, much of which was disposed of on site. The site was proposed for the National Priorities List in May 2000.
