One Site Proposed and Two Sites in the Southeast Finalized for Inclusion on EPA’s Superfund List

Sites in Georgia and North Carolina proposed and finalized for inclusion on EPA’s NPL

(ATLANTA – September 21, 2005) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed the addition of one site and finalized the addition of two sites in the Southeast to the Superfund National Priority List (NPL) of hazardous waste sites. The proposed site is the Alternate Energy Resources site in Augusta, Georgia.  The two sites finalized for the NPL are the Peach Orchard Road PCE Ground Water Plume site in Augusta, Georgia and the Blue Ridge Plating Company site in Arden, North Carolina.  Nationally, five sites were proposed and seven were finalized for inclusion on the NPL.  The NPL identifies abandoned or uncontrolled hazardous waste sites that warrant remedial (long-term) action.

EPA identifies and ranks NPL sites according to threats to nearby populations through actual or potential contamination of groundwater, surface water or air.  The sites are eligible for cleanup funded under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), as amended by the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA).
