CLEANUP COMPLETED AT JFD ELECTRONICS/CHANNEL MASTER SUPERFUND SITE IN OXFORD, GRANVILLE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced the completion of a remedial action (cleanup) at the JFD Electronics/Channel Master Superfund site in Oxford, Granville, North Carolina by the Potentially Responsible Party under the authority and oversight of EPA and the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Cleanup activities at this site were documented as complete on May 2, 2002 in the Interim Remedial Action Report. This document marks the beginning of the Long-Term Operation and Maintenance phase, in which the groundwater treatment system will continue operation and monitoring. A five year review will be conducted by September 30, 2005. The cleanup included groundwater pump-and-treat to address volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and cyanide and the excavation and transportation of contaminated soil and sludge for off-site treatment and disposal. The excavated areas were filled with clean soil, compacted, sloped for proper drainage and grass was planted. The JFD Electronics/Channel Master site consists of approximately 13 acres, about 2 miles southwest of Oxford. The site was operated by JFD Electronics/Channel Master from 1961 until 1984 for the manufacture of antennas, amplifiers and boosters. It is currently used as a distribution center. From 1987 to 1992, DENR and EPA conducted investigations at the site, and confirmed the presence of soil and sludge contaminated with metals and cyanide, as well as groundwater contaminated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and cyanide. The site was placed on the National Priorities List (NPL) in October 1989. Documents pertaining to the site are available at the Information Repository for public review at Richard H.
