OCTOBER IS COMPUTER RECYCLING MONTH IN SANTA CLARA COUNTY

Release Date: 10/9/1997
Contact Information: Paula Bruin, U.S. EPA , (415) 744-1587

(San Francisco)-During the month of October, Santa Clara County residents may recycle their used computer equipment by dropping it off at the three designated computer retail locations.

"There's still some value in those old computers, and reusing and recycling them sure beats throwing them into landfills." said Felicia Marcus, U.S. EPA's western regional administrator.  "We are urging Santa Clara County residents to take an important step toward conserving our natural resources by going to their garages and attics, digging out their dusty old machines, and recycling them."

The three locations that will accept used computers and computer parts are Fry's Electronics, 550 East Brokaw Road, San Jose, Calif. (408-487-1000); Computer City at Valley Fair Mall, 3049 Stevens Creek Blvd.,  San Jose, Calif.  (408)-556-2400; and OfficeMax, 3530 Stevens Creek Blvd., San Jose, Calif.  (408-984-0158).  This collection and recycling pilot project is being made available through a public/private partnership which also includes Unisys Corp., Envirocycle, Techneglas, Berman's Diversified Industries, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the California Environmental Protection Agency, the U. S. Environmental/Recycling Hotline, the California Newspapers Association, Santa Clara County, and the City of San Jose.

Interested Santa Clara County residents can find which of the three participating stores are nearest to them by calling 1-800-CLEANUP, or accessing the Internet at www.1800cleanup.org.

"The 800-CLEANUP hotline is proving to be a convenient means of assisting Californians with information on participation in environmentally friendly programs such as recycling old computers," said California Secretary for Environmental Protection Peter M. Rooney.  "This is a common-sense way to help protect the environment and add economic value through recycling products that otherwise would add to landfill waste."

The project is part of a nationwide computer recycling pilot program to determine the feasibility of collecting, transporting and recycling computer equipment collected from  individual households and small businesses.  The equipment will be taken from the collection points  to Berman's Diversified Industries, a de-manufacturing facility located in the San Jose area.  Berman will either remarket or recover and recycle materials and components.

The recycling centers will accept computer CPUs, monitors, keyboards, printers, peripherals (mouse, cords, external storage devices), internal computer parts (hard drives, floppy drives, CD-Roms, power supplies, cards and chips, and mother boards).
