EPA to Hold Public Meeting April 14 on Cleanup of Former Crown Laundry Site in Indianapolis

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(CHICAGO – April 12, 2011) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will host a public meeting Thursday to discuss the cleanup of the former Crown Laundry site, at 2913 E. Washington St., Indianapolis.

The meeting will be at 6 p.m., April 14, at Englewood Church, 57 N. Rural St. The purpose of the meeting is to provide details on the cleanup EPA began this month at the site. After a short presentation, there will be a question and answer session.

The cleanup, which will take four to six weeks, will involve removing underground storage tanks, sampling and excavating contaminated soil, air monitoring, testing nearby residential properties for contamination, and disposing of hazardous materials off-site.

EPA first assessed the site in October 2010 and removed numerous 55-gallon drums and smaller containers of hazardous substances such as ammonia, benzene and lead.

Crown Laundry operated as a dry cleaner from 1910 to 1975. The property was subsequently operated by ESP Industrial as an electrical services parts distributor and most recently, part of the site operated as an automobile repair facility.
