A new office designed to help the U.S. and Mexico address environmental problems along their shared border opened today in Monterrey, Mexico. The office will provide assistance and logistical support to the Border 2012 program's Texas-Coahuila-Nuevo Leon-Tamaulipas regional workgroup, Border 2012 program task forces and communities on both sides of the border.
"The U.S.-Mexico border region is one of the most dynamic in the world. I am pleased to partner with SEMARNAT, EPA's counterpart in Mexico, to help this area accelerate environmental protection -- protecting our land, cleaning our air and cleansing our water -- while growing the region's economy and increasing job opportunities," EPA Regional Administrator Richard E. Greene said.
SEMARNAT Federal Delegate for Nuevo Leon Dr. Alfonso Martinez said, "Building a sustainable future for the U.S.-Mexico border region should be an important commitment for both countries. The new EPA-SEMARNAT office in Monterrey is an example of commitment and collaboration and will be an important support for the efforts of both agencies in bringing a better future for the binational region between Texas, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas."
The Border 2012 program's goal is to protect the environment and public health in the U.S.-Mexico border region, consistent with the principles of sustainable development. The Texas-Coahuila-Nuevo Leon-Tamaulipas regional workgroup is working to address such trans-border issues as air and water quality, hazardous waste and hazardous materials management, emergency response, environmental health and education, and agriculture.
The office is jointly funded by EPA and SEMARNAT, assisted by the Border Environment Cooperation Commission. It is located at Palacio Federal Juarez #500, Cd. Guadalupe, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, and may be contacted by phone at 52 + 81-83-69-089-32, by fax at 52 + 81-83-69-89-35, or by e-mail at [email protected].
