TEXAS METAL FINISHER SENTENCED
FOR DUMPING HAZARDOUS WASTE
FOR DUMPING HAZARDOUS WASTE
Buryl H. Head, former owner of Texas Metal Finishing (TMF), in Round Rock, Texas, was sentenced on Sept. 16, to spend five years in prison and pay $25,490 in restitution by the U.S. District Court in Austin. Head previously pleaded guilty to illegally transporting and disposing of hazardous wastes in violation of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and to making false statements to a federal agent. After the defendant closed TMF, he dumped hazardous chemicals in a remote location in Williamson County on two occasions in July 1997. The chemicals included wastes that were legally classified as corrosive materials. Corrosive wastes present a danger of burns to humans and wildlife that come in contact with them. The defendant also admitted that he knowingly lied to an EPA Special Agent when asked about the location of various pieces of metal plating equipment, supplies, chemicals wastes and business records of TMF. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation and the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission Special Investigations Office, and was prosecuted by the U.S. Department of Justice.
