(Boston, MA —February 21, 2012) State Street Corporation, based in Boston, Mass., Ahold USA, based in Quincy, Mass., and Hartford Fire Insurance Company, based in Hartford, CT., are being recognized by EPA as being part of the nation’s top purchasers of Green Power.
EPA, through the Green Power Partnership, works with more than 1,300 partner organizations voluntarily using more than 21 billion kilowatt-hours of green power annually to reduce the environmental impacts of conventional electricity use. This is equivalent to avoiding the carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity use of over 1.8 million average American homes for a year. Green power is electricity generated from renewable resources such as solar, wind, geothermal, biogas, and low-impact hydro and produces no net increase of greenhouse gas emissions.
State Street, as a part of its commitment to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, is meeting approximately 94% of its electricity demand with renewable resources. State Street works to fulfill its role as a good corporate citizen through the implementation of its Corporate Sustainability Program. As part of that program, State Street has set goals to lower GHG emissions and committed to purchasing certified renewable power. State Street's green power purchase has helped establish the corporation as a leader among U.S. financial services companies, and demonstrates its commitment to sustainability to all of its stakeholders around the world.
Ahold USA is an international group of supermarkets based in the United States and Europe. In the United States, Ahold USA owns Stop & Shop, Giant Food, Giant Food Stores, Martin’s Food Markets and Peapod, the largest online grocery delivery service in the country. The company currently uses over 149 million kWh of green power, purchasing 148,700,000 kWh Renewable Energy Credits, and generating 560,000 kWh of onsite solar power, for a total of 7.3% of their total electric load. Ahold USA's green power purchase is equivalent to avoiding the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of more than 20,000 passenger vehicles per year, or the CO2 emissions from the electricity use of nearly 13,000 average American homes annually.
The Hartford Fire Insurance Company, Inc., founded in 1810, offers insurance products including auto and fire insurance. The company’s green power mix currently consists of 10 million kWh of Renewable Energy Certificates and 188,000 kWh of onsite solar generation, representing over 6% of their electric demand. Hartford Fire Insurance Company’s green power purchase is equivalent to avoiding the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of more than 1,000 passenger vehicles per year, or the CO2 emissions from the electricity use of more than 800 average American homes annually.
“These Green Power Purchasers are driving the development of new renewable energy sources and demonstrating that green power makes good environmental and business sense,” said Curt Spalding, regional administrator of EPA’s New England office. “We applaud their efforts and hope that other organizations follow their lead.”
