PHILADELPHIA (September 22, 2014) – Childcare professionals are invited to a one-day training course aimed at creating healthier environments in and around child care facilities, by EPA which is co-sponsoring the workshop.

The workshop will be conducted by the National Center for Healthy Housing using an established environmental childcare program. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23 at the Penn State Center, 675 Samson Street in downtown Philadelphia.

The class is free and open to childcare providers, child care licensing and/or resource staff, and child care health/nurse consultants. Attendees will learn free or low cost steps they can take to protect children in their care from common environmental hazards. Professionals who complete the course will earn continuing education units.

Research increasingly shows that the first years of a child’s life are critical to shaping their future health and development. Child care professionals can make small changes that will have a big impact on the children within their care. By reducing toxics, such as chemicals in certain cleaning products and weed killers, providers help prevent illnesses like asthma, certain learning disabilities, and even some forms of cancer. For these reasons, providing an environmentally healthy, low‐toxic setting is particularly important in places children spend the majority of their time.
This workshop will create healthier environments in and around child care facilities, which will, in turn, create healthier kids.

This course is sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in collaboration with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and the Philadelphia School and Community Partnership of the Pennsylvania Integrated Pest Management Program, Penn State University.
