PHILADELPHIA - The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today a $500,000 grant was awarded to the Middleburg Municipal Authority for the construction of a wastewater treatment plant and collection system in the Village of Kissimmee, Snyder County, Pa.
"Many people take good water quality for granted. Much of the improvement in water quality can be attributed to wastewater treatment facilities. This grant is an important step in improving and maintaining healthy water quality," said Regional Administrator W. Michael McCabe.
Funding for this project is provided under the EPA’s portion of the Departments
of Veterans Affairs and Housing and Urban Development, and Independent Agencies Appropriations Act of 1998 (P. L. 105-65). The grant funds are awarded to economically-stressed areas where wastewater treatment is necessary for the health and safety of the community. In Kissimmee, this is particularly vital due to the use, by the public, of private wells for drinking water.
A serious health threat exists in the community from numerous on-lot wastewater system malfunctions and contaminated groundwater. The collection system and wastewater plant will also eliminate odor from raw sewage overflow discharges and improve the health of the local stream.
