Three South Dakota cities earn EPA Clean Water Act awards

Watertown, Huron, Sisseton each to receive recognition
EPA Region 8 Assistant Administrator Steve Tuber said, “These EPA awards recognize innovative processes and practices at wastewater treatment facilities. Well-managed facilities such as these help ensure a clean environment and protect the public’s health.”
At 7 p.m. Sept. 5 at Watertown City Hall, Watertown S.D., EPA officials will present a Regional First Place Award for outstanding and innovative achievements through operations and maintenance at the Watertown Wastewater Treatment Facility. During the past year the facility demonstrated outstanding collection system maintenance management, financial management and toxic waste controls. The award will be presented during a city council meeting to Watertown Mayor Paul N. Fox and Michael Boerger, Superintendent of Wastewater and Solid Waste.
At 1:30 p.m. Sept. 6 at Huron City Hall, Huron, S.D., EPA officials will present a Regional First Place Award for outstanding and innovative achievements through operations and maintenance at the Huron Wastewater Treatment Facility. During the past year the facility demonstrated outstanding process control and field monitoring, storm water controls and toxic waste controls. The award will be presented to Huron Mayor Mary Pearson, David McGirr,Water & Sewer Commissioner, and Vince Juelfs, Water & Sewer Superintendent.
At 7 p.m. Sept. 6 at Sisseton City Hall, Sisseton, S.D., EPA officials will present a Regional Second Place Award for outstanding and innovative achievements through operations and maintenance at the Sisseton Wastewater Treatment Facility. During the past year the Sisseton Wastewater Treatment Facility exhibited outstanding best management practices for operations and maintenance reviews, toxic waste controls and non-discharging plant operations. The award will be presented to Sisseton Mayor Frank Karst, and Kenneth Cordie, Plant Superintendent.
