FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Kansas City, Kan., Sept. 12, 2012) - EPA Region 7 today issued an amendment to the Record of Decision (ROD) for the Cleburn Street Well Superfund Site in Grand Island, Neb. EPA signed the ROD for the site in June 1996 to address soil and ground water contamination at Operable Units (OU) 1 through 4. The ROD amendment changes the selected remedy for the ground water contamination at the former One Hour Martinizing dry cleaning facility (OU2).
The original selected remedy in the 1996 ROD for OU2 was a Ground Water Extraction and Treatment system. The selected amended remedy is in situ thermal remediation of the remaining source materials at the facility along with in situ chemical and/or enhanced biological remediation of the dissolved ground water contaminant plume emanating from the source. EPA will implement this amended remedy.
The contaminant of concern at the Cleburn Street Well site is tetrachloroethylene (PCE). PCE is commonly used in dry cleaning operations and is an industrial degreaser. The site was added to the National Priorities List in 1992.
