EPA awards $9,990 to UNLEADED education project

CHICAGO (Aug. 5, 2005) — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has awarded a $9,990 environmental education grant to Michigan Family Resources, Kent, Mich., for its UNLEADED project.

As the primary provider for Head Start services in Kent County, the non-profit organization serves more than 1,600 children and their families. The UNLEADED program educates service providers, community leaders and decision makers about childhood lead poisoning and its causes and suggests intervention and prevention strategies. Outreach materials for parents, caregivers and the public will be produced and distributed throughout Kent County.

Michigan Family Resources is among 16 organizations in the six-state region that received a total of $194,900 in environmental education grant money this year from EPA. More than 130 proposals were received from groups in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. EPA grants are awarded yearly under the National Environmental Education Act, which was passed in 1990 to stimulate environmental education through design, demonstration and communications projects conceived by local organizations.
