EPA to Hold Public Meeting and Begin Cleanup in Baldwinville Neighborhood

BOSTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Mass. Department of Environmental Protection will be holding an information meeting 7 pm Tuesday, Aug. 10 at the American Legion Hall on Central St. in Baldwinville, a part of Templeton, to discuss activities beginning this month to remove contaminated surface soils from 28 residential properties in Baldwinville.

The properties, located near the former Temple-Stuart facility, were identified during EPA’s sampling program last year. Beginning next week, the properties will be sampled to further delineate the extent of surface soil contamination. Excavation, back filling and restoration of yards is expected to continue into the winter.

EPA’s cleanup plan, called a time-critical removal action, focuses on residential properties in the Baldwinville neighborhood. Surface soil samples collected from the front and back yards of the individual properties last year showed PCB-contamination in the surface areas. At the public meeting EPA will outline the cleanup activities. EPA has also been meeting with individual homeowners in preparation for the removal activities.

Community members can expect to see EPA staff and contractors surveying the area, selecting sample locations, collecting surface soil samples and excavating soil. A second round of properties is expected to be sampled in the fall. EPA will then determine if any more properties need to be cleaned. EPA will also have a trailer at the former Temple-Stuart facility so staff can work on site.
