EPA REQUESTING PUBLIC COMMENT ON NEW DATA
FOR PROPOSED RULE TO REDUCE FORMATION OF DISINFECTION BYPRODUCTS UNDER SAFE DRINKING WATER ACT
EPA is seeking public comment on new health effects data in support of the Stage 1 Disinfectants and Disinfection Byproducts Rule which was proposed on July 1994 under the Safe Drinking Water Act. The new health effects information has become available since EPA published a Notice of Data Availabilty in November 1997. EPA is requesting all comments on the notice be received or postmarked by midnight April 30. EPA intends to issue the final Stage 1 Disinfectants and Disinfection Byproducts Rule in November. A companion rule addressing disease-causing organisms (pathogens) in drinking water, referred to as the Interim Enhanced Surface Water treatment rule, will be issued at the same time. For additional information on the new Notice of Data Availability, the public can call the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.
