Natural gas and kerosene-like gas ‘condensate’ proposed for extraction from North Slope

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is asking the public to help identify important environmental issues related to an ExxonMobil proposal to extract natural gas and kerosene-like gas “condensate” from Alaska’s North Slope.

The EPA, cooperating with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the Army Corps of Engineers, will produce an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on the proposed project. The public is being asked to help identify issues to be explored in the EIS. The EIS “scoping” period will run from October 14 through November 30, 2002. The EIS team will travel to each of the potentially affected communities to meet with residents to listen to their issue concerns and answer any questions. The schedule for the “scoping” meetings throughout Alaska follows:

    According to the National Environmental Policy Act, an EIS will:
    • identify all reasonable alternatives for the development of a project;
    • identify all the impacts of the alternatives; and
    • evaluate the effectiveness of mitigation measures that would lessen the environmental impact of the project.
