DELAWARE COMPANY PLEADS GUILTY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL VIOLATIONS
The Hanlin Group Inc., a Delaware corporation, pleaded guilty on July 28, to seven violations of federal law in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Georgia in Brunswick. The violations, which occurred at Hanlin’s LCP Chemicals facility in Brunswick, Ga., included infractions of the Clean Water Act; the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act; the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act; and the Endangered Species Act. LCP manufactured chlorine bleach, caustic soda, hydrogen gas and hydrochloric acid. In the process, mercury and chlorine were released into Purvis Creek. Contact with sufficient quantities of mercury can lead to a variety of neurological and other disorders. Chlorine is a highly caustic material which can cause chemical burns in people and can be harmful to aquatic life. When sentenced, Hanlin faces a maximum fine of up to $500,000 on six of the counts, and a fine of $250,000 or more on one count. The case was investigated by EPA and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.R-102 ###
