(05/14/03) EPA Administrator Christie Whitman today recognized 18 Veterans Health Administration (VHA) hospitals across the country with the ENERGY STAR for their superior energy efficiency. Whitman was joined by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi and Department of Energy Assistant Secretary for the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, David Garman at an event held at the Department of Veterans Affairs honoring federal leadership in energy management in the healthcare sector.

“I am proud to recognize these hospitals today for their strong commitment to help save the environment through energy efficiency,” said EPA Administrator Christie Whitman. “From Boston to Seattle, these hospitals serve veterans in big cities like Philadelphia and in less populated areas such as Fort Harrison, Montana. No matter their size or location, these hospitals show what it takes to earn an Energy Star– a firm commitment”.

Over 150 VHA Medical Centers used EPA’s national energy performance rating system to compare their performance with similar hospitals nation wide. The 18 hospitals being recognized today earned the ENERGY STAR for demonstrating energy efficiency in the top 25 percent of hospitals nation wide. These awards reflect a joint effort among the VHA, EPA, and The Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. The award winners are listed below.

Hospitals that qualify for the ENERGY STAR recognize the value of managing their energy, not only to save money, but also to improve patient services. These hospitals carefully monitor their energy use to identify the best ways to improve efficiency, and many have taken such measures as improving their lighting technology, upgraded air handling systems, and replaced inefficient heating and cooling systems.

ENERGY STAR has become the national symbol for energy efficiency and is recognized by over 40 percent of the American public. ENERGY STAR is helping consumers and businesses to protect the environment through energy efficiency. For more information about ENERGY STAR, go to: http://www.energystar.gov or call 1-888-STAR-YES
