Four Governors Commit To Protect Delaware River

CAMDEN, N.J. - Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania will renew their commitment to the protection and enhancement of the Delaware River at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, at the Delaware River Basin Governors’ Summit at the New Jersey State Aquarium in Camden.

Governors Christine Todd-Whitman of New Jersey and Thomas R. Carper of Delaware will be in attendance. Representing Pennsylvania Governor Thomas Ridge will be James Seif, Pennsylvania secretary of Environmental Protection. Commissioner John Cahill of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation will represent Governor George Pataki.

Among the federal officials who will sign the resolution will be EPA Regional Administrators W. Michael McCabe of the mid-Atlantic region and Jeanne Fox of the region covering New York and New Jersey.

"The health of the estuary is dependent upon the health of the entire basin. The focus of the Delaware Estuary Program is, of course, the estuary, but, the program is keenly aware of its vital connection to the entire basin," said Jeanne M. Fox, EPA Regional Administrator. "That is why the original signers of the estuary management plan are here today -- to reaffirm our commitments to the health and sustainability of the entire Delaware River basin."

After the signing, a recipient from each state will be honored with a governor’s award that recognizes outstanding individuals or organizations that have dedicated time, effort and hard work to the Delaware River and its resources. The governor’s summit emphasizes basin-wide planning and shares a vision for the future of the Delaware River.
