D.C. Gas Station Resolves Alleged Underground Storage Tank Violations

PHILADELPHIA - - The Samad Corporation will pay a $29,000 penalty and has certified they have corrected all alleged violations at its Citgo gas station in Washington, D.C. to settle an EPA complaint involving underground storage tank violations.

The gas station located at 3820 Minnesota Avenue, N.E. has three 10,000-gallon gasoline underground storage tanks and one 1,000-gallon tank used to store used motor oil.

EPA cited Samad for a variety of underground storage tank violations including failing to test for leaks in the used oil tank, failing to equip the gasoline tanks with overfill prevention devices, and failing to provide proper corrosion protection for steel piping components.

As a part of the settlement, Samad has neither admitted or denied liability for these violations.

With millions of gallons of gasoline, oil, and other petroleum products stored in underground storage tanks throughout the U.S., leaking tanks are a major source of soil and groundwater contamination. EPA and state underground storage tank regulations are designed to reduce the risk of underground leaks and to promptly detect and properly address leaks, thus minimizing environmental harm and avoiding the costs of major cleanups.
